Giving a Gift That Fuels Curiosity

Alan and Della Wells

Alan and Della Wells

Alan Wells and his wife, Della, grew up in small, middle-class families with loving parents who instilled in them “the value of a good education, curiosity, travel and a strong work ethic.” They both worked part-time throughout much of their high school and university years. After graduation, Alan obtained employment in the environmental sciences while Della was employed in computer sciences.

Now in their retirement years, they want to share their good fortune with others:

“Undoubtedly, one of the most influential factors in our lives has been our university-level education. Without it, we could not have achieved the ultimate success we enjoyed in our professions. It also helped fuel our curiosity, interest and desire to experience other lands and cultures, and to gain a better understanding of the world around us, for which we are eternally grateful.

“We both vividly recall struggling to meet our financial needs during our university days. But with various forms of work assistantships and an occasional bit of outside part-time work, we were both able to make it through our university years debt-free.

“Our goal is to fund an endowment to Cal State Long Beach to provide scholarships, bursaries, teaching assistantships or work programs for senior undergraduate and graduate students in the biological sciences. We hope our financial assistance enables more students to pursue educational opportunities leading to productive, joyful and fulfilling lives.”
